Size guide
Our measurement standard
The size of bike frames has historically been based on the length of the seat tube. Different methods have been used by manufacturers to measure the seat tube over the years.
At Upcycles, we use the traditional center-to-center (c-c) measurement of the seat tube as the standard for all bikes featured on our website.
Key dimensions
Seat tube (c-c)
This measurement is taken from the center of the bottom bracket spindle to the center of the top tube and seat tube intersection.
Top tube (c-c)
This measurement is taken from the center of the seat tube to the center of the head tube.
Head tube
This measurement is taken externally from the top to the bottom of the headtube, measuring the total length of the headtube. It determines the bike's handling and steering characteristics.
Standover
The standover height of a bike is the vertical distance from the ground to the top of the top tube, measured just in front of the saddle. This measurement is crucial for determining if a bike is the right size for a rider.
When standing flat-footed over the bike, aim for about 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5 cm) of space between your inseam and the top tube. This will provide optimal standover clearance, ensuring you can comfortably dismount and stand over the bike without feeling cramped or at risk of injury, especially on uneven terrain.
Frame size chart
Welcome to our sizing chart, where we help you find the perfect bike frame size to match your riding style and height! Choosing the right size is crucial for comfort and performance, so let’s get you rolling in the right direction.
Below is a general guide for road bike frame sizes, ranging from 48 cm to 62 cm, along with the average rider heights associated with each size. Frame size is determined by the seat tube length that we mentioned previously. Keep in mind that mountain bikes or other types may have slightly different sizing recommendations, so always check the specific guidelines for those bikes.
Frame size (cm) | Size label | Rider height (ft/in) | Rider height (cm) |
48 cm | XS | 5'0" - 5'3" | 152 - 160 cm |
50 cm | Small | 5'3" - 5'5" | 160 - 165 cm |
52 cm | Small/Medium | 5'5" - 5'7" | 165 - 170 cm |
54 cm | Medium | 5'7" - 5'9" | 170 - 175 cm |
56 cm | Medium/Large | 5'9" - 5'11" | 175 - 180 cm |
58 cm | Large | 5'11" - 6'1" | 180 - 185 cm |
60 cm | XL | 6'1" - 6'3" | 185 - 190 cm |
62 cm | XXL | 6'3" - 6'5" | 190 - 195 cm |
Remember, this chart is a general guideline. Individual preferences and body proportions can vary, so it’s always a good idea to test-ride a bike if possible. Happy cycling!
